As of Friday, video game voice actors under SAG-AFTRA, have decided to strike against Electronic Arts, Activision, Disney and other high-profile game companies.
The strike follows unsuccessful negotiations to improve compensation for actors after an existing labor contract expired almost two years ago. Video game voice actors, many of whom are freelancers, feel that they are eligible to receive additional compensation. Actors face physical strain and vocal damage incurred in their line of work, as well a lack of guaranteed employment prospects and lengthy time-off in-between assignments (sometimes as a result of strain or injury from a previous assignment).
Typically, voice actors receive a flat block rate for several hours worth of work instead of a royalty check or passive income over time. For example, a standard rate for a voice actor right now is a little over $800 for a four-hour recording session. In addition to this compensation, voice actors are seeking performance-based bonuses (in the form of residual income) on top of the rates they currently charge. This would provide the actors some added financial security and stability.
Actors will be picketing outside of the Electronic Arts building in Los Angeles later today from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
